The project was a vertical expansion, multi-level parking structure accommodating 300 parking spaces. A site study identified the best location on campus for the new parking garage, narrowing down from five possible sites to three for in-depth study and cost analysis. As a result, parking lot 1 was chosen as the preferred location. This site allows for 367 total spaces and uses existing grading to create separate entrances and exits for visitors and employees. The design incorporates security lighting, CCTV, and emergency call phones throughout the structure.
The design also included pedestrian circulation pathways, wayfinding, landscaping, surface roadways, drainage, and lighting systems. An Environmental Evaluation and a traffic pattern study were conducted to provide the Providence VAMC with insights on site preparation and traffic diversion during construction. With the Providence VAMC expanding and seeing increased outpatient specialty clinic volumes, parking availability has become critically insufficient. This shortage is causing patients to skip appointments and physicians to avoid routine meetings and non-clinical activities. Staff driving habits are also affected, with employees arriving much earlier to secure parking and avoiding leaving at lunch to retain their spots. Temporary solutions, such as expanding parking onto limited grass areas and offering off site parking, have not met the needs of patients, students, visitors, and staff. This parking inadequacy leads to increased patient complaints, decreased patient satisfaction, reduced staff mobility on campus, and limited patient access to care.
